| Tattoo Visibility |
Question:
I was considering getting some tribal shoulder work and I wanna ask a little question:
If I get the tattoo and am forced into a conservative job in the future
(god forbid), will the blackwork be visible through an undershirt and a
dress shirt?
And yeah, I have heard the "don't get it unless you're committed" argument
- what can I say, I'd like some ink on my torso, but not if it'll mess up
my chances of finding work in a few years.
Answer: - My two cents:
I have 18 (mostly bright & colorful) tats, the major part on my arms and
torso. Two of them are, in fact, on my wrists. I always wear long
sleeves and and undershirt if necessary with a white or light-colored dress shirt.
Until I thought I would go mad and run away screaming, I worked for
the Department of Labor in San Francisco. No one tripped on my
wrists, which I really can't hide.
I have worked a few other white collar jobs since graduating from
college and found the _only_ place that would not hire me was _not_
due to the tats on my wrists or my (in)ability to hide the rest of
them, but b/c of a lower
bottom front gold bridge I acquired about 7 years ago after being
losing my original teeth in a car wreck.
Their loss!
Eh, go figure. I'm sure you'll be fine, but I can understand your
worries.
I had the same m'self.
- my chest tattoo shows through my "interview clothing".
so i tape a doubled piece of toilet paper to my chest. it works.
there's always a way to hide what you don't want seen.
you may want to black-sharpie some designs onto your skin, dress
up in your own "interview clothes", & see for yourself. thick black
sharpie isn't going to be any less visible than black tattoo work.
- As I was in a previous post I have both arms heavily sleeved as well as a
full back piece and one half of my chest. The answer depends on the
thickness of the shirt. If I need to wear a white shirt and find that it
would not be benificial to advertise my tattoos then I wear a double cotton
shirt possibly with a t shirt under.
- I've got extensive tribal work across the top of my back and traps. I
had much the same worries as you, working in investment banking (go
figure). You'll be fine under a t-shirt and a dress
shirt.
