| Astronomy and tattoos, was: Re: Seizure of Texas Star (an alcoholics viewpoint!!) |
Question:
You never can tell about the amateur astronomers, I see them sitting around

Answer: -To the owners of the land the TSP is renting, amateur astronomers *are*
the general public. You may be convinced of the sober and inocuous
nature of every amateur astronomer (and I largely am too), but unless
the landowners share your experience it's prudent for them to seek to
forestall problems. Since drinking alcohol is in no way a prerequisite
to a successful star party, keeping alcohol out would make a lot of
sense from their point of view.
The owners of the TSP site are certainly not alone in this. Our local
astronomy club (Saguaro Astronomers of Phoenix) likewise bans alcohol at
star parties, and I image our club is not the only one.
- This actually happened to me one time. I was at an astronomy
club session and there was a fellow there who was quite heavily
tattooed. I have some, and I was wearing a T-shirt from a tattoo
convention that evening, so we talked a bit. He is a tattoo artist
here is Los Angeles, and also is an avid amateur astronomer. It
was an interesting experience, having two of my favorite hobbies
collide.
Incidentally, the only other usenet group I read that is as good
as s.a.a is rec.arts.bodyart, and I've noticed little, if any
crossover between the two.
