| Questions about Tattoo symbols ??!! |
Question:
anybody know where I might be able to find any pictures of the symbol
for 'Destiny'? A friend is looking for the symbol as a potential tat. I'm
presuming there would be different symbols for different
languages/cultures/beliefs etc. I think he is chasing something to do with
Buddhism but any versions would be appreciated. I've been searching the web
but to no avail.
Answer: - I disagree. Oriental characters are more like art than words. There is a
difference in having a word spelled out in english, which is essentially
phonetic, than having a single symbol which represents an idea. Even to a
Chinese person, the symbol stands for more than just the sounds that come
out of your mouth.
- If you want to write something on your body permanently do it in your own
language. If you think it'd be too cheesy to just have the word DESTINY
written on your body, you're right. Language makes it NO better.
- How about the symbol for the character of destiny in sandman? I can't
find the image online, but I know there's a sigil for each of the
endless.
- I agree with this take in that Oriental characters (kanji sp?) do represent
more of the idea of a word. I've toyed with the idea of getting something done
in kanji for a tattoo, although I'd probably keep it more lowkey than some of
my tats. In the end, I probably won't do it, as I have too many better ideas
for my next (probably several) tats.
A word of caution to anyone who gets a tattoo w/ a foreign language in it.
Make sure that you know for damn sure that the work you're getting is "spelled"
correctly. Kanji characters are fairly common, but are easy to fuck up. And
sometimes they just combine the characters that phonetically say the word you
want, but the actual characters together amount to gibberish to anyone who
knows the language. Find a native/fluent speaker you trust to make sure that
you're getting exactly what you want.
