Question:
Given a design for a tattoo -- say, for example, this:
http://www.rpi.edu/~wisnij/images/life.gif
How fine can lines be made, and stay roughly accurate to the original?
Obviously it will not be perfect, but would this remain legible?
Answer: - It is amazing how fine a line one can tattoo. So I think it would be completely possible to get the image as
a tattoo. The problem is something called pigment migration. Once it is in
the skin, it'll look pretty damn good, but time and sun can make the
pigments from the tattoo will begin to migrate out of your skin as well as
outward from its point of origin.
This is why you see a lot of older people with tattoos that have become
muddied and indistinguishable from their original look.
In time, you could have one big black circle. How fast will this happen? A
lot of factors govern that, so it is impossible to tell you. I've got ink
that is now over 20 years old and while it still looks great, I can tell the
lines have kinda thickened over the years. I try to keep my ink out of the
Sun too to slow this down.
-Because this way I can not only (potentially) get several replies at once,
but roughly judge their relative validity by reading other posts made by the
respondees. This is the internet, after all; the ability to access and
compare bits of information is the whole point. Furthermore since there are
no tattooists whom I trust (yet; I'm sure that will come later), and even if
there were I would have no means of getting to them, this leaves Usenet as my
only current source of information. Perhaps not the most reliable one, but
somewhat better here than in other groups; if someone says something wrong
they are likely to be corrected in short order.
- How about you take it to a tattooist you trust & see
what HE says?
sure, i know tattooists who would put that on you. they'd even do
a great job. & i know plenty who'd say it's way too fucking small & it'd
better take up your whole back if you want it to last for any serious
amount of time. further, we don't know the condition of your skin. so pack
it up & head outside, 'cause rab can't answer your query with any
authority.
