| Thoroughbred Tattoo Letters |
Question:
I asked this before, and stupidly lost the list, so can anyone help me out with
a list of TB tattoo years? We have a rescue case at our barn whose tattoo isn't very
clear, the best we can figure the letter is an "I", and she's about a 3 year old or so.
Does that sound right?

- If I remember correctly, you supplied me with the original list that I lost. I
guess that this particular mare doesn't have an "I" tattoo, but most likely a "Z", I'm
going to double check (she's most definitely a 2 or so year old) my next work day. Why
is it that TB tattoos are almost always unreadable?
- X was '68 (personal experience) so X was also '94. Z='96, A='97, B='98.
- I don't know, but on one so young I'm a little surprised. By the time my
horse turned 18 or so the X was pretty hard to see. I knew what it was,
though (as well as the actual date of birth, in April '68), because i had the
papers.
- After reading this thread, I am baffled. It is *highly* unlikely that a
2 year old has an illegible tattoo, because they aren't tattooed until
they are ready to start a race, so any tattoo a horse this young would
have should be very clear and legible.
- If you have the registration papers and know for a certainty
who the horse is and how old he is, the tattoo is always clear as the output
of a laser printer. If you know nothing, it is inevitably a big smudge...
