| Anyone have/getting a "fine art" tattoo |
Question:
I'm having a local people modify a basic painting to tattoo on me.
Anyone else in here interested in things like that? If I didn't use
this one, I'd probably pick a Venus painting or maybe use a print of
Nike (the winged statue...not the swoosh).I just know this is the thing for
me.
Answer: - Being an art critic isn't as important as knowing what you like; you
don't have to know WHY you like something to appreciate it. I am
familiar with Bouguereau's work.
Sort of reminds me of those displays at fairs and carnivals: the only
thing separating you and your friends from being a muscle bound
guy/shapely chick in a bikini/ boxer dog is putting your face in an
empty circle and having your photo taken.
If you want to honor your wife in the best possible way with a beautiful
tattoo, why not have an artist draw a completely unique image, in the
classical romantic style, with your wife as the subject? It seems it'd
be much more a compliment that she inspired her own piece of art (maybe
even help develop it?) than to just add her in to something someone
else did. I have very mixed feelings on treating a classic piece of art
as if it were standard shop tattoo flash where you tweak one item or
another just to make it "yours" especially in the case of changing
pretty much every element of the main image.
Again, there is something to be said for knowing what you like and if
you're comfortable with him doing the work, more power to you. On the
subject of choosing an artist because he/she won awards, well, there are
many artists who've won awards and have work which is almost
embarrassing to the trade and plenty more artists who have never won an
award and really bring something to the art of tattooing.
Pretty sure? What other placements have you considered?
I am in the process of collecting more images to add to a Maxfield
Parrish inspired sleeve on my right arm and am currently having a tattoo
artist draw up some original art-nouveau styled designs for a chest
piece which I should have finished by mid February. I've yet to decide
if I want my left arm to be a different artist (I'm considering Mucha)
or a continuation of the Parrish theme.
- Yes,I think so!
- I'm pretty sure I'm going with a William Bouguereau painting. He was
one of those classical realism painters--I think anyway. I'm not
exactly an art critic. I originally had in mind that I wanted to get
a pinup tattoo of my wife. But over time, I decided I wanted
something more...well...classic. (And in my own opinion, maybe
classIER. Just my own feeling.) I'm having Ron Meyers redo the
original artwork for me so that it better resembles my wife.
Different face (of course), different hair, different chest. And I
think I'm having him change some of the colors a little. But the
piece will be immediately recognizable to someone else who's familiar
with the painting. Ron has his own website. It's
ronbigdaddymeyers.com. I COULD do more research and find a tattoo
artist who's done something like this before. But I stopped looking
when I found Ron because he's won some awards for color work and his
detail work really impressed me. Oh, and he's moving to Magnum
Tattoing II in Jenison, MI. They seem to have a really nice setup.
Clean, no smoking, and everyone I've talked with there was very
professional. I'm pretty sure I'm putting the picture on my back, up
by my right shoulder. I have a feeling that once he does the job, a
picture will be posted on his website. If I can ever scrape together
enough money to pay for the amount of size and detail I'm looking for,
it should be a pretty awesome piece.
