| Cleveland adopts piercing/tattoo regulations |
Question:
I got some very interesting news today...
After some bickering and political grandstanding, the city council of
Cleveland adopted, in full, the regulations for tattooing and body piercing
adopted by the state of Ohio. These means that all piercing and tattoo
(tattooing is actually illegal at this point) shops in the city limits of
Cleveland will be inspected twice per year and will have to meet a very
strict standard for operating their shops and providing piercing/tattooing
services.
One of the more interesting things is the limitations placed on ear piercing
guns. While the use of ear piercing guns will still be legal for ear
piercings, anyone (including the people at the mall) using ear piercing guns
will have to meet some strict standards. A few of these include:
* Ultrasonic cleaning of the device between each customers
* Disinfection with a high-level, hosptial-grade disinfectant
* A prominent sign will have to be displayed which states something to the
effect that the ear piercing gun is NOT sterile/sterilized and has only
been disinfected.
There are some other conditions as well, but these are the 3 big ones that
stand out in my mind...
I thought someone like to know...
What do you think?
Answer: - I concern it, too. While I was working in Akron, OH a few years
back, we were able to persuade the Health dept. to make it a misdemeanor to
pierce any part of the body, with the exeption of the lobe, with the piercing
"gun". This was added on to their local county piercing legislation, but I
have been informed since that time, the law has never been enforced and no
inspections have been given.
Unfortunately, it seems that political grandstanding and the bickering between
shops, are the only reasons many areas have chosen to instate regulations.
But hey, if a couple of city council members and even the mayor are able to
publicly take responsibility for it, then its a success.....right???
They said that about tattoo shops here in New York last year, but there have
been no inspections yet. This is an important issue in the regulation here,
and so far, it goes overlooked.
I am a little upset that they chose to combine tattoo and piercings in the same
regulation.
I have the highest hopes that it will work to the benefit of both clients and
studios in Cleveland.
From what I hear about Body Works, the inspectors will actually have to pay
THEM to inspect their shop. Plus the inspectors will be able to use that as a
credit in sterilization towards their nursing courses.....but thats just what I
heard...
- This is one of the most amazing pieces of news I have heard.
Wow. I am blown away. That is some amazing. Am I correct
in assuming David Vidra and you acomplished this? I'm sure
it was a team effort.
That sign alone, is going to have a more positive affect
on Piercing than any thing up to this point.
People are going to look at the sign and think twice.
