Meaning of 'Knife through Heart' tattoo

Question:
Could someone please tell me what the traditional significance was and/or now is of the tattoo of a red heart with a knife or dagger going through it. Is it a representation of love found? Love Lost? Or something else.

Answer:
-You said "The 3 of hearts does indeed mean love lost (or fading) among other things." -I believe it represents the avulsion of cardiac muscle from the thoracic cavity {having ones heart ripped out}. The sort of experience the late Sam Kinison frequently bitched about. -That tattoo image is closely related to the 3 or Hearts card in the traditional tarot card set. The 3 of hearts does indeed mean love lost (or fading) among other things. thanks. I was interested in the meaning of the tattoo. Obviously very different to a heart with a cupids arrow going through it. Perhaps one can start with an arrow and modify it into a dagger later on when the romance turns sour I ask, because a friend of mine had one done recently. He's been very coy about telling anyone the significance of the design what HE seems to know exactly what it means. It's obviously very personal to him. He thought long and hard about the design before hand so it was NOT just selected out of a book. He's always had problems with getting or more importantly maintaining relationships so your description of the meaning is interesting. It seemed strange though to emblazon it on his forearm 8" long. When he first showed me the design I thought it was for the upper arm, not for the forearm and I was a bit schocked when he appeared with the new tattoo in all it's glory 2 days later.
