| Indigo Girl Tattoo Story |
Question:
Last week I went to see
the Indigo Girls at Rec Hall here at
Penn State! Amy Ray was breaking alot
of strings! It was a really great show--
there was alot of warmth between the
crowd and the stage! It sounds *really*
corny, but there was this tangible
feeling of , "Hey, you're my sister!"
Anyhow, as Amy was trying to get one
of her guitars in tune, the audience got
to ask questions of both of the Indigo
Girls. I raised my hand up high, but
someone else asked it before I got a
chance: "What does the tattoo on your
[Amy's] arm mean?" (It's a stylized
hand)
She said, "It's been such a long time
since I got it...I don't remember. I was
so young and stupid!....And I just got
another one this afternoon!" I looked
around, and sure enough, there was
my tattoo artist in the stands, waving!
Phil at Art of the Ages did a Celtic knot
piece on her stomach, with zoomorphic
dogs! After the concert, I went over to
talk to him about finishing my
backpiece (it's currently just the outline
of a Celtic cross with zoomorphic dogs
and was started 2 years ago), and he
told me that he hadn't known who Amy
Ray was! He had asked her what she
was doing in State College up from
Georgia. She said, "Well, I'm in a
band, and we're playing here tonight."
And she gave him a couple of tickets!
BTW, the bassist from the opening
band, Lift, also had a tattoo on her
inner forearm! Looked like a heart with
a name in a banner above it, but I am
not sure. I am also not sure if it was
real.
Answer: I love the Indigo Girls! A few years ago I saw them in NYC at the
Beacon Theater. (It was the Rites of Passage tour.) After the show,
my friends and I hung around to see if we could catch them on their
way out. We did, and we all kind of said "hey" and "we really enjoyed
the show" and Amy signed album sleev-ish things for us. As she was
handing me mine, she caught a glimpse of the tattoo on my finger. She
said, "Cool tattoo," and I nearly responded "hey, let's find someplace
quiet and I'll show you the rest of them, nudge nudge". Not really.
But it was a neat moment anyway.
