Question:
I'm looking for find a design for a custom tattoo, I'm attacted in if
anyone can recomaend any good books/albums/magazines/anything
which would have nice designs for a tribal tattoo.
Answer: - This might be the place to point out a little distinction between tribal, as
in the different North American Indian tribes, and tribal in the commonly
understood tattoo sense.
In the tattoo sense, tribal usually refers to mark(s) which people of similar
affinity might wear. It may be a stylized bird or free form work. If it is
not representing something easily identifiable such as fauna or flora, it is
quite often labelled tribal.
I would suggest leafing through tattoo magazines, the library is a source,
the local newspaper outlet and the tat shops themselves. Go there, tell
whoever "welcomes" you at the shop what you are interested in and ask them
to show you some examples or let you leaf through the mags which should be
lying around.
- I suggest that you go to an art supplies store or a bookstore, and check out
their design sections. Browse, and I'm sure you'll find something of interest
(U. of Waterloo must have some kind of library) also very helpful- again,
their design/anthropology sections.) You can find some really good source
guides for illustrators and designers, often region- or style- specific. For
instance, celtic designs, religious symbols, designs of Mexico, etc. I have a
bunch of these which have given me great inspiration for designing my own
tattoos.
