| Welsh Tat Con LONG... |
Question:
It was basically divided into 3 areas, the largest containing the stage and
various stalls selling flash, belts & buckles and fantasy
clothing. There were two tattooists in this part but the rest of the artists
were in the bar. There was also a walk thro' marquee which had stalls for
'Skin Deep' mag and bodyart books. Dave Fleet (the organiser & Tattooist of
'Abracadabra') had a bodypiercing booth set up here.
Walking into the bar area at 5.30pm I was greeted by the magnificent sound
of approx 15 tattoo guns firing ink into skin!
It set my heart pounding.
The 7th Welsh Tattoo Convention was held at the Countryman Inn at Blackwood,
Gwent on friday 16th of september.
It was the first convention I had ever been to and was attended by approx
2004 other people. The place was heaving
(I think a bigger venue might be more comfortable), but the atmosphere was
great.
There were artists from all over the country from Scotland to Southampton,
Essex to Pontypridd. Some of the work they were producing was breathtaking.
The stamina of the tattooists and their subjects had to be applauded. Some
of the large pieces were taking in excess of 3 hours non-stop!
There was a very brave (IMHO) girl having a *major* backpiece work of a
dragon done and then there were the other people having large and intricate
tattoos of Dragons, a freehand unicorn (which was looking v. good), a
portrait of Stone Cold Steve Austin (on a lady's leg) amongst other things.
There were also those having the 'spur of the moment' tats done by
tattooists that they wouldn't normally be able to get to. Although I must
admit that to me it wasn't the ideal place to get work done, mainly because
I'm a real stickler for hygiene and cleanliness, which try as they might the
artists could not have achieved in that environment as well as they could do
in the studio.
The cigarette smoke and crowd jostling were not the best conditions
IMO......What does everyone else think?
Am I just being paranoid, are all Tattoo Cons the same?
The entertainment consisted of live bands, an 'adult' female comedian, and
strippers, (both male & female).
Sorry folks, but I didn't get to see any of them, the place was just too
crowded. But from the crowd reaction and comments afterwards empty Budwieser
bottles featured heavily!!
I didn't get any ink done, but I just couldn't resist getting my conch
pierced by Dai Fleet. He was meticulously clean and every thing was sterile.
No xylocaine, (it hurts me more in the long run) and in a matter of a few
minutes I was two-thirds of the way towards my tragus-conch industrial
project.
Waa hey!!
So there you have it,
I didn't stay til the end - went home at 7:15pm so don't know who won what
catagories.
But a good time was had by all methinks...
