| Drawing Oriental Dragons |
Question:
I was over at my friend's house the other day and started to draw an
Oriental Dragon, with the little whiskers and all, but even though I liked the
way the pic has turned out so far, It doesn't seem to have much of an Oriental
Feeling. anyone help me?
Answer: -there's almost an art to it. Anyone can draw a dragon (make a basic
brontosaur shape, slap some wings and a few horns - and there you go. ),
but orientals are a tad different.
I prefer Old School orientals myself - the ones in the Forbidden City columns
in China, the full-body tattoos, old Japanese drawings, etc. A lot of the
ones folks try to pass off as orientals, well, I feel something's lacking
from them.
Orientals, IMO, are the dragons of the flowing lines (which is why I like 'em
so much ). Not only their sinuous bodies, but their whiskers, the fire
(or wings) around their legs, even their claws and antlers. There's an
aesthetic to drawing, but it's rather hard to explain tho.
Best thing I can do is point you the SuperDuper Archive of orientals dragons:
http://www.karate1.com/dragons/maindrag.htm I think there's over 400 pics
or something there. I also have put a few of my own online
http://quelm.camalott.com/~desu/Oriental.gif - for the other two, replace
'Oriental.gif' with 'Ix.gif' and 'Ix2.gif' - if the pics look funny, well
it's because I use a palm scanner and I'm not very good at stitching.
