| Help with ideas for tattoo, christian designs.. |
Question:
I turn 18 next sunday and I'll be heading over to Funhouse
Tattoo to have Rob Soli ink me with a custom cross design on my upper
back / lower neck for my first tattoo. I'm drooling just thinking
about it, I can't wait.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about my design lately. I really
like the cross design, but for some reason I don't feel overly
stimulated by the meaning behind the cross, which probably has
something to do with its overuse in modern design. I really like that
catholic heart w/ flames design for its symbolic value, but I don't
like the way it looks
I've had a hard time finding something I
really liked. The cross works well and I like the way it looks, but I
don't want to do it before I know if there is anything else more
significant.Could anyone suggest other ideas for fairly symbolic christian symbols
I could have overlooked?
Answer: - There are several books on Christian designs, and a number of different designs
of crosses, from the very simple Greek or equal arm cross, to the patriarchal
cross, to the Byzantine (sometimes called Russian orthodox) three bar cross. If
there is a good Catholic Book store, Christian Book Store, or library nearby go
there for some ideas. You might also think about going into one or another of
the older Catholic parishes in your area to look at the designs in the windows.
There may be other ideas there. And, of course, if all else fails discuss it
thoroughly with the artist and see what version the two of you can come up
with.
- What you oughtta do, is go to a record store, and ask for the CD of a band
called "the path of resistance". There is an awesome tatto photo on the
inside of the cover: it is like a sacread heart, but with a cross coming
out from the top of it. But the way it is done is VERY unusual, and it has
an awesome effect.
- the Jerusalem Cross, the Maltese Cross, the Cross of St. Michael (red equal
arm cross with a ball at each of the ends) and the Calvary Cross(latin cross on
three steps) and the Cross fleury (looks lik eit is made with 4 Fleur-de-lis
joined at the pointed end) and the Lozenge cross, the besance cross,
cross-crosslet fitched,......shall I go on??? there are LOADS
of different versions of the cross available. That's why I suggest going to a
book on Christian symbols at a library or store.
- You may want to consider a dove. It's not only christian but also a
symbol of peace. I have tattooed several ministers and the dove seems to
be popular among those of the cloth.
