| Angel's Tattoo |
Question:
Please forgive the intrusion, but we have to know:
Is Angel's tattoo also David's?
In other words is it real? Also, what is it?
Answer: -Tattooing has existed for at least 4000-5000 years. Scientists have
Egyptian mummies whose skin bears the mark of tattooing, which date from
2000 BC
Europeans were reintroduced to the art in 1769, when explorers came into
contact with Polynesian tribes. The Maori of New Zealand are known for
their very elaborate facial and body tattooing. The Chinese have been doing
it for centuries, as have the Japanese. The Ancient Romans used tattoos to
recognize slaves and criminals, or as a sign of rank.
Angelus was quite the world traveller, and could have easily had this tattoo
done. He took on the name Angelus sometime between 1753 and 1760, and was
cursed by the Kalderesh in 1898. So he could have gotten his tattoo at any
point in that 140 year span.
-Definitely no, they stencil it in for the show when he has to take his shirt off.
David Boreanaz does have a tattoo on his arm which matches one on the arm of his
wife, Jaime Bergman. I used to have a picture the two of them showing it off
somewhere.
-it is a fake.
and its of a mythical creature called a griffin, head of a lion, body of an
eagle, and theres another critter in there somewhere that i can't remember.
-It's drawn on by the make-up department. The first time Angel took his
shirt off in Buffy, Joss wanted him to have a cool/unique tattoo. So Todd
MacIntosh came up with the design we now see...though Joss wasn't expecting
it to be as big as it is.
What it is is a Gryphon clasping an A between it's paws. The design of the
tattoo was actually taken from the Book of Kells.
Here's a good picture of it - http://zenkitty.home.att.net/Angelstattoo.htm
It also shows the original image as it appears in the Book of Kells.
-in that episode, when buffy helped giles identify angel as angelus by his
tattoo, did they mean to imply that angel has had that tattoo all along?
that style and quality of tattoo wasnt even around back then.
